Versatility and Authenticity
Nitya Mathur

Nitya Mathur, recently seen in OTT series Taza Khabar, is quickly becoming one of the most versatile and authentic performers in the world of OTT entertainment. Known for playing an array of diverse characters, Nitya’s approach to acting is both thoughtful and transformative. In this interview, she opens up about the importance of preparation, the evolving landscape of digital platforms, and the challenges she faces as an actor. Conducted by Farvi Wadhwa, this conversation delves into Nitya’s process, her most fulfilling roles, and even a few humorous behind-the-scenes moments.

  1. You’ve played a range of characters on OTT platforms. How do you approach preparing for roles that are so diverse and emotionally demanding?
I love the preparation bit. It’s arguably my favourite part. I get very curious about my characters. I like to have a holistic person with likes, dislikes, backstories, memories, relationships, goals etc. in my mind before we start shooting. So I ask a lot of questions. And honestly, a good script will have all the answers in it. So I love to befriend the script, and as an extension, the world and the character. I love speaking to my director about how they’re imagining the character and align it with my ideas as well. In short, my preparation is asking lots of questions, finding the answers, and lots of imagination.
  2. OTT platforms have brought in a new era for storytelling. How do you think this medium has changed the landscape for actors like yourself?
Well, it has definitely widened the number of opportunities, and more importantly, the quality of opportunities as well. I find versatility to be the most exciting part of acting. And OTT has really opened up the types of characters one actor can play. A 15 year old school girl, to a sheltered daughter of a billionaire, to a 20 year old math wiz from the galis of Mumbai, all within a few months. How exciting! It’s my true hope and wish that a filmmaker’s freedom to tell the stories they want and how they want doesn’t get taken away from them. That’s when we can push the boundaries of art and tell exciting stories.
  3. Your performances have been highly praised for their depth. How do you balance staying authentic to a character while ensuring your portrayal stands out in a crowded digital space?
It all comes down to honesty. The audience needs to feel connected to your character – either see themselves in it or someone they know. And at the end of the day, all humans, no matter where we’re from, feel the same core emotions. So one really just needs to focus on portraying a character and their circumstances with honesty. The depth, authenticity, and relatability will naturally stem from that.
