Based on the remarkable true story of India’s first-ever Paralympic gold medallist, Murlikant Petkar, who rose to fame in 2018 after years of obscurity and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972. This story, which is told in flashback, focuses on a young Maharashtrian kid who, after witnessing the triumph procession honoring K. D. Jadhav for winning the first individual medal for the newly independent country (India) in 1952—a bronze medal—and desires to become a famous wrestler. Murli is mistreated by other students, mocked by his father, and underestimated by his coach. However, his life takes a turn when he defeats the arrogant son of the town headman in a public fight, leading to a riot that forces him to leave his village.
Fortunately, Murli’s hopes are saved by the Indian Army. After switching to boxing under the instruction of new trainer Tiger Ali, his hopes of winning an Olympic medal were crushed by gunfire from Pakistani soldiers during the 1965 conflict. Murli keeps going and swims to success in the Heidelberg Paralympics despite being in pain because bullet that was lodged in his spine. The movie reminds people of Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, in which the champion athlete overcame his traumatic past and used his military training to achieve success on the track.
The biopic made more over Rs 5 crore on its first day of revenue. It did well at the box office and made a significant amount of money because of the love, good recommendation, and extremely great reviews.
