Mussoorie is often associated with the name ‘mansūr,’ a shrub commonly found in the area. The town is usually referred to as Mansuri by Indians. Mussoorie is a hill station and municipal board in Uttarakhand in India. It is in the city of Dehradun, which is in the Dehradun district. It is 290 km (180 mi) north of New Delhi, India’s capital. Dehradun, the city of the state, is 35 km (22 mi) away. The hill station is near the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas. “Greater Mussoorie” includes the nearby town of Landour, which has a military base, and the villages of Barlowganj and Jharipani.
Mussoorie is about 2,005 meters (6,578 ft) above sea level. The Himalayan snow ranges are to the northeast. The Doon Valley and Shiwalik Mountains are to the south. The original Lal Tibba in Landour is the second tallest mountain. It is over 2,275 m (7,464 ft) high. People often call Mussoorie “The Queen of the Hills.” Mussoorie has recently become famous again as a new place to visit. It has many exciting areas, such as Camel’s Back Road, Dhanaulti, Lal Tibba, and more.
The weather in Mussoorie is a reasonably typical subtropical highland climate. The summers are warm and very wet. In July and August, it rains an average of 660 mm (26 in) per month because the mountains lift the very wet monsoonal air. It is warm, dry, and clear in April and May before the monsoon season. By mid-June, it starts to rain a lot, and the season after the monsoon is also dry and clear but much more relaxed. It rains a little more often in the winter than before and after the monsoons, and the weather is usually calm and partly cloudy. Mussoorie usually gets snowy spells in December, January, and February. However, the number of snowy days has been decreasing over the past few years because of local and global causes, such as cutting down trees, building homes, and global warming. The town has a rare “winterline” event from October to February.
